How Can Software Help with Load Shedding?

Load shedding in South Africa has become very much a part of living in our beautiful country, and something that will probably be part of life for years to come. But, while the average person on the street can plan around the impacts of power interruptions, big business has a very different existence, often hamstrung by power outages. A situation made worse by the imposition of load shedding schedules thrust upon the country at short notice, the costs of which cannot be underestimated. CSIR puts the cost of load shedding at R700-million for every day of black-outs, while PwC estimates that load shedding cost our country 3% of GDP growth in 2021 alone.

On the power supply side, solar and other renewable technology is seen as the silver bullet to the country’s power crisis, but implementation continues to be delayed policy implementation. While government and Eskom slowly sort out the procurement of additional power supply, what then can companies in complex supply chain and manufacturing do to reduce the effects of load shedding in the here and now?

The answer – looking to industries that have been doing this for decades:

We believe that epic ERP is just that, epic! So, to put it to the test, we thought we would ask our recently recruited Finance Manager, Corné van der Westhuizen, her thoughts about the company, and the onboarding process.

epic ERP: It is great to have you onboard, Corné! Where are you joining us from?

Corné: I started my career in 2012 as a trainee accountant at an audit practice. My four years with the audit practice gave me a lot of exposure to a host of industries (small to medium size companies). Once I completed my articles, I accepted a position as a financial clerk at a horticulture company in 2016. I was fortunate to have been promoted twice, from admin clerk to financial controller, thereafter I was promoted to finance manager in 2018. My time with this horticulture company had many highlights – l grew and learned so much as an individual. Some of these highlights include the responsibility given to me as finance manager, it broadened my perspective beyond just crunching numbers, made me think and work within a team and taught me to think as a problem solver.

 

epic ERP: Why did you decide to climb aboard the epic ERP train?

Corné: Honestly, when the recruiter suggested I apply for this role I initially said: “No way! The tech industry is so complicated”, haha. But even after the very first interview with the epic ERP team I was impressed by the family-like company culture and really wanted to be a part of it.

 

epic ERP: In a nutshell, what does your role at epic ERP entail? 

Corné: I am employed as the finance manager. My responsibilities include, but aren’t limited to the following:

  • Compliance with relevant laws and regulations (SARS, Company’s Act, etc)
  • Preparing and maintaining important financial information and reports
  • Assist the business in making critical financial decisions by collecting, tracking and correcting the company’s finances
  • Ensure adherence to implemented controls and procedures

epic ERP: What have been the highlights of transitioning to this role so far?

Corné: Being with my previous employer for almost six years, my colleagues truly became like family and I wasn’t expecting to feel quite at home for some time. But I was received with a warm welcome at epic ERP and within these few weeks, I already feel part of the team!

The induction process here was also comprehensive, and the previous finance manager has been incredibly helpful with the handover. He even made tutorial videos I can refer back to you, and helped me decipher all the acronyms that are used in a tech environment.

Other highlights would include the exposure to a new industry and making new acquaintances.

epic ERP: And the lowlights?

Corné: Lowlights would be the typical “teething issues” in a new role of being unfamiliar with the accounting system and unfamiliar with the processes and procedures, which I’m getting more comfortable with.

epic ERP: How would you describe your start at epic ERP so far in three words?

Corné: Exciting, supportive, and epic!

epic ERP: Lastly, what do you hope to achieve while at epic ERP?

Corné: I hope to be a valued member of the Epic family, assisting the business to grow even more into the wonderful potential I see for it!

We believe that epic ERP is just that, epic! So, to put it to the test, we thought we would ask our recently recruited Strategic Account Manager, Nicolas Baker, his thoughts about the company, his new team, and the industry we call home!

 

epic: So, Nic, tell us about your first day and first impressions of working at epic.

Nic: I have had the very fortunate experience of having worked with epic over the past few years, as a supplier, so I already knew some of the wonderful team when I walked in for the first time as an official team member. It was initially a worry for me, leaving a group of people that I had grown incredibly close to over the last few years, but the guys here have done an amazing job of making this feel like home. Working closely with various technology companies in the past and having been involved in the development of numerous digital, online, mobile and app projects has prepared me well for this new challenge, but there is certainly a lot to learn about ERP and business software that I am very much looking forward to.

 

epic: What do you have to say about the epic ERP approach?

Nic: These guys are seriously passionate about what they do. The moment you walk through the door, you encounter innovation, from the connected factory demo at reception to the proprietary Signature Methodology we employ as a project management philosophy. I learnt quickly that epic is driven by a desire to help their clients achieve greatness and this is done using their trusted implementation schedule, which encompasses five steps to mitigate risk and ensure quality delivery (Prepare, Plan, Design, Validate, Deploy).

 

epic: How have you found your new colleagues?

Nic: My first impression was that these guys know how to play hard and work hard. It’s a team comprising exceptionally clever people, from engineers, to MBA graduates, to doctors and even a pilot! They are at the coalface of what is an intensely exciting industry, pushing boundaries with what ERP implementations can do, ensuring the perfect fit to client requirements. They are happy to roll up sleeves and get their hands dirty, which is something that suits me perfectly! Having said that, the team is not afraid to let their hair down at a Friday braai with a couple beers and the light jesting that naturally comes with them.

epic: So, Nic, tell us about the transition to the ERP industry?

Nic: As mentioned, I was not new to the technology space, being heavily involved in custom development solutions at my previous company. Having said that, the ERP industry is an intensely competitive environment, with some massive household names like Epicor, Microsoft, Oracle, and SAP. However, I believe that epic ERP has strong differentiators, like being truly vendor agnostic and having invested in the skillset to navigate this incredibly dynamic industry. The fact that we have a team of highly qualified specialist consultants in-house that can roll out various ERP solutions definitely gives us an edge. This, married to a singular focus on meeting and exceeding client expectations puts us ahead of the competition.

epic: Lastly, what do you hope to achieve while at epic ERP?

Nic: epic’s executive team have a long and storied history in the ERP industry, with 75 years of cumulative experience. It’s safe to say that our heritage is rooted firmly in ERP and, as a result, we have vast competence in delivering full lifecycle projects across various industries, deploying the best fit for purpose solutions that can only be achieved by being truly vendor agnostic. I aim to augment this offering by providing clients with service delivery that matches our dedication and innovative spirit. About Dr. van Eck

At age 13, Danéel van Eck wrote his first commercial software application that was distributed on thousands of PC’s, and by 16 the software products he had developed for technical configuration of telecommunication systems had gone fully commercial. 

This progressed and he built a business on custom software development. Danéel has provided consulting input to many companies on their IT and business strategy and he has built and sold multiple companies. 

His research for his PhD concerns the conditions under which intuitive decisions can be effective, and focuses on how complexity affects this. Danéel is also a qualified commercial helicopter pilot and instructor, and teaches new pilots to fly in his spare time.

Van Eck holds several qualifications. BSc Computer Science (Wits), MBA Strategic Management (TVU London), PhD in Business (GIBS).

How the ‘green’ cloud helps fight climate change

Vibhu Kapoor sat down with ITWeb to share the benefits of Epicor’s “green cloud” solutions, and we want to share this great article with our readers.

South African organisations across the board must do more to support the country’s commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and the “watershed” agreement announced by President Cyril Ramaphosa at the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26) held in Glasgow recently. 

That’s the view of Vibhu Kapoor , Regional Vice-President, Epicor Software, Middle East, Africa & India, who maintains that the best way to accelerate progress towards the goals of the Paris Agreement and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change is if governments, businesses and communities work together to instigate and implement change.

At COP26, countries promised to end deforestation, curb methane emissions and stop public investment in coal power. South Africa, one of the biggest carbon emitters on the African continent, has an elaborate and consultative climate governance system. Despite this, its reliance on coal-powered energy, coupled with a shortage of capacity to deal with climate change, has made it difficult for the country to meet its commitment in Paris to reduce carbon emissions by 34% in 2020 and 42% in 2025. 

It was therefore not surprising that President Ramaphosa hailed the $8.5 billion agreement South Africa reached in Glasgow with the US, the UK, Germany, France and the EU to phase out coal power stations and invest in new sustainable energy sectors as a “watershed moment”. It was, he said, “proof that we can take ambitious climate action while increasing our energy security, creating jobs and harnessing new opportunities for investment”.

Kapoor believes that South African businesses, like their counterparts around the world, could – as part of their corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives – implement more environmentally sound practices in their organisations, including implementation of cloud computing.

Epicor recently surveyed 1 250 technology decision-makers in the US and UK to establish, among other objectives, how cloud related to their organisation’s sustainability objectives. The research results indicated an encouragingly positive trend, with 93% of respondents saying sustainability was one of their focus areas, of which 41% stated it was a key focus area.

Reasons cited by the respondents for adopting the “green cloud” included:

  • Digitising paper-based communications that they reduce reliance on paper;
  • Reducing energy consumption and the reliance on fossil fuels;
  • Enabling a more sustainable supply chain; and
  • Enabling remote work with resultant reduction in carbon emissions.

Kapoor says digitising communications processes through the implementation of cloud-based electronic document signature solutions reduces paper wastage and minimises their environmental impact. In addition, 42% of the Epicor survey respondents believed cloud computing would also significantly reduce IT hardware wastage in their organisations.

He also notes that while the cloud was associated with a large carbon footprint because of data centres’ significant energy requirements, much of which is generated by fossil fuels, this has changed. The big three cloud providers (Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud) already run on 60% renewable electricity and all have promised to completely decarbonise their data centres.

“Importantly, moving data from in-house servers to the cloud reduces companies’ own energy consumption,” Kapoor adds. Over 40% of Epicor’s survey respondents cited a reduction in expected energy usage when they no longer have to run on-premises servers; and 45% believed cloud-based IT solutions would facilitate access to greener energy sources.

Respondents also regarded a move to the cloud as a way to enable more sustainable choices, with 42% claiming they would consider choosing a cloud-based IT solution that locates servers close to renewable energy sources.

As far as supply chain management is concerned, Mark Griffiths, global head of climate business at the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), points out that sustainable supply chains aren’t driven by technology, but are rather enabled by technology, including cloud technologies that deliver near real-time visibility and greater accountability.

Kapoor agrees, pointing out that modern supply chains utilise vast amounts of data which, when organised and analysed via a single, uniform cloud-based platform, help to drive efficiencies and the optimisation of global transport routes (thus reducing transportation-related emissions).

Unilever is going even further. The company is working with Google Cloud to fight deforestation by mapping satellite images of forested and deforested areas against data on suppliers. This enables the company to ensure it is buying products from sustainable sources.

Other companies are also using the cloud in this way. Over 40% of Epicor survey respondents believed the cloud would facilitate the ethical sourcing of materials that it would enable them to build more resilient, transparent and sustainable supply chains.

Finally, while COVID-19 has shifted working patterns, there was already a slow move to employees working remotely before the pandemic. This trend accelerated in the lockdowns enforced around the world. Cloud computing enabled this shift, but – Kapoor acknowledges – the jury is still out on its environmental benefits. In countries like the UK, the increased need to heat individual workers’ homes in winter may dilute the benefits realised in summer; while in countries with very hot summers, the use of air-conditioning in individual homes would consume even more energy.

Even so, 40% of Epicor survey respondents cited lower workplace carbon emissions enabled by remote working as a key benefit of cloud computing.

“In South Africa, heating and air-conditioning may not be as much of an issue as in other countries; however, when one considers that most employees who are able to work from home commute to the office in greenhouse gas emitting vehicles – their own or a minibus taxi – the environmental benefits of remote work is clear,” Kapoor says.

“In light of the urgency with which climate change must be addressed, local businesses have to play, and cloud adoption offers a win-win option in their efforts to do so.”

1. Project Team

Establishing a strong project team is critical. Typically, an ERP implementation team includes an executive sponsor, a project manager and representatives of key business groups involved in the project. Many organisations select cloud-based ERP systems, which can be easier and faster to implement and don’t require capital investment in hardware.

Financial Services, Digital Transformation and Covid-19

ITWeb Brainstorm hosted an online roundtable discussion around digital transformation of the financial services and the impact of Covid-19. The topic was ‘what has Covid-19 taught financial services?’

This is what our director of strategy, Dr Danéel van Eck had to say:

“My mother-in-law always refused to use internet banking,” says director of strategy at Epic ERP, Dr Danéel van Eck. “But because of social distancing, she has become a frequent user and is completely comfortable with it. Similarly, some friends of mine who would never have considered shopping online are now buying more than just groceries online. I myself never really got into video conferencing aside from a few Skype video calls to overseas customers, but now using Zoom and Teams is second nature.”
